Great Success of Quantum Latino 2023
|
We are very proud to annouce that Quantum Latino 2023 was a great success!👏👏👏The event was jointly organised by QURECA, Quantum South, Kipu Quantum, and the Unconventional Computing Lab. It brought together over 340 registered attendees both online and in-person, with a diverse audience profile including students, academics, and industry professionals. The hybrid format allowed for an expanded reach beyond Latin America to audiences in Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa. The excellent feedback from participants reflect the engagement and high quality of presentations and activities made available throughout.
Through 46 total sessions over the three days, attendees had the opportunity to learn from 76 esteemed speakers delivering keynotes, short talks, workshops, and participating in panels on topics aimed at fostering the growing quantum ecosystem in Latin America. Sessions helped connect the academic, industry, and enthusiast communities through valuable discussions on the latest developments.

QURECA Outreach Activity - Researchers Night
|
What Did Quantum Have To Do With Dinosaurs? QURECA participated in the outreach activity, "Researchers Night," which was held at CosmoCaixa, a science museum located in Barcelona. This is where we showcased our Qureka! Box in front of a dinosaur exhibit!
Participants ranged from 6-year-old children to science enthusiasts of all ages, and approximately 100 people approached us. What makes the Qureka! Box unique is its ability to explain complex concepts, even to those with no prior knowledge, making it accessible to everyone. The highlight of the event was a demonstration of the first module of the Qureka! Box. By engaging with the public and asking them questions, we guided them to understand the concepts of quantum states, superposition, and the collapse of superposition. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive! Surprisingly, everyone (and yes! everyone) was genuinely captivated by the activity, especially the youngest ones. By the end of the session, it was evident that the participants had gained a visual understanding of these often-intricate concepts.🐱 😸 😼

@QTIndu: It has been a great opportunity to showcase #QTIndu (#Quantum Technologies courses for Industry) last week at #EQTC2023, together with our partners! We presented a wide range of courses and modules, including the introduction of fundamental quantum mechanics concepts through illustrated experiments and hands-on labs, the investigation of the quantum computing ecosystem and its potential applications, the exploration of quantum communication protocols and network analysis, the provision of mathematical foundations and visual understandings of qubit engineering, and the examination of superconducting devices and quantum hardware experimentation. We are glad to have received feedback from the visitors, which will help ensure that we offer the right courses to develop knowledge and awareness in quantum technologies for all audiences, in a wide variety of backgrounds and industry sectors. Learn more about QTIndu: www.qtindu.eu.
@GESDA: We also participated in #GESDA 2023, the Geneva Science and Diplomacy Anticipation Summit, hosted at the CERN Science Gateway in Geneva, Switzerland, on October 11-13. Maninder Kaur, the program manager of QURECA, joined a panel to discuss innovative quantum education solutions to empower people with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in this quantum era.
@NQIRES (Nottingham Quantum Initiative Research Showcase): On October 20th, Simon Armstrong, content manager at QURECA, participated in the industry panel chaired by Dr. Katherine Inzani.

For this edition, we’d like to begin by highlighting the Nobel Prize awards in Chemistry and Physics!
Our deepest congratulations go to Professor Moungi Bawendi, Professor Louis E. Brus and Dr Alexei I. Ekimov for sharing the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2023 ‘for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots’. First synthesised in the early-80s by Dr Ekimov, these nanoscale crystalline structures were found to exhibit an inseparable link between their optical properties and crystal size. Through rigorous research, it was found that the structure’s tight-packing caused Quantum Confinement, a phenomenon which results in engineerable-control of absorption and emission of light as well as other advantageous properties. This has made quantum dots a very attractive technology, with applications including #quantumcomputing, medical sciences and digital displays (some of you may even be reading this newsletter on a QLED screen!) as well as future applications in microsensors, thinner solar cells and #quantumcommunications!

Next, we also offer our deepest congratulations to Professor Pierre Agostini, Professor Ferenc Krausz and Professor Anne L’Huillier for sharing the Nobel Prize in Physics 2023 “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter.” This incredible discovery is so unique as it allows investigation into electron dynamics on the timescale of chemical interactions. What does this mean? Our human experience happens at rate so slow that physical and, often, chemical interactions are long since finished within the blink of an eye. To investigate the very fast, we need a very fast probe! The duration of an attosecond, 10-18 seconds, is so instantaneous, that there are as many attoseconds within one single second, as there have been seconds occurred since the Big Bang! This newfound technique may see future applications in quantum computing for state preparation, logical operation and measurement upon #qubits as well as error mitigation and correction.

Lastly, we’d like to highlight a major breakthrough in neutral atom quantum computing. On 12th October, the collaboration between Harvard, MIT and QuEra announced 99.5% two-qubit entangling gate fidelity across 60 qubits! What does this mean? Quantum computers are powerful devices which may solve complex problems that supercomputers may never be able to. The hidden power lies in their quantum phenomena and inter-connectability, namely #entanglement, however, such connectability is useless if it creates errors in the system. This result is greatly significant in removing those errors and taking us one step closer to accurate #quantumcomputing!
