Quantum Phenomena

Quantum technologies harness the principles of quantum mechanics to build powerful tools for processing information. These are the technologies driven from engineering the individual quantum states.

Qubit

It is the quantum analogue of the classical bit. While a bit can only take the value 0 or 1, a qubit can also exist in a combination (superposition) of both.

Measurement

The ability of a quantum system to exist in multiple possibilities simultaneously. For example, a qubit can be in 0 and 1 at the same time.

Superposition

When measuring a quantum system, we do not observe the superposition directly: the superposition collapses and the system takes on a definite value. This process is probabilistic, and the probability of each outcome is determined by the superposition prior to measurement.

Entanglement

Two or more quantum particles can be correlated in such a way that measuring one instantly determines the state of the other, even if they are separated by great distances.

Tunneling

Quantum particles have a nonzero probability of passing through barriers even without having the necessary energy. This phenomenon is key in processes such as nuclear fusion and in electronic devices like the scanning tunneling microscope.
