Barcelona / Cáceres, December 2025 — The Extremadura Foundation for Computing and Advanced Technologies (COMPUTAEX), a non-profit public entity created by the Regional Government of Extremadura in 2009, has formalised a collaboration agreement with QURECA, a company specialising in quantum technologies, for the provision of strategic consulting and technical advisory services. This collaboration is part of COMPUTAEX’s commitment to the development of emerging technologies and the strengthening of the regional quantum ecosystem.
Under this agreement, QURECA will offer expert support in technical decision-making and in the design of strategies for the development of regional quantum capabilities, including scientific outreach activities. It will also collaborate in the creation of consortia to participate in R&D&I funding calls, analyse new lines of research in quantum computing applicable to the innovation center, provide specialised training, and develop market studies and technological forecasts to identify relevant opportunities and use cases in various industrial sectors.
COMPUTAEX manages the Extremadura Supercomputing Center, which offers advanced infrastructure and technical support for scientific, technological, and business projects. Among the services it provides are high-performance shared and distributed memory systems, High-Performance Computing (HPC), Quantum Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Cloud Computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), system virtualisation, mass storage, data and critical application security, as well as consulting, training, and inter-institutional cooperation.
The Center is part of the Extremadura Science, Technology and Innovation System (SECTI) and the Spanish Supercomputing Network (RES), and is recognised by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities as a Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS). Since its creation, it has supported more than 250 R&D&I projects, facilitating access to advanced computing resources for scientific and technological communities across multiple disciplines.
Its Data Processing Center houses the LUSITANIA supercomputers, and an expansion is planned for the coming months that will allow it to surpass the Petaflop threshold of computing power—equivalent to one quadrillion (10¹⁵) floating-point operations per second—through the incorporation of the LUSITANIA IV supercomputer, a cluster from MareNostrum 4, the strengthening of the capabilities, infrastructure, and equipment of supercomputing centers within the PERTE Chip program, and the installation of a state-of-the-art quantum emulator.
COMPUTAEX actively participates in various quantum research projects. At the national level, it is part of the Quantum Spain project, which focuses on implementing a quantum computer for the benefit of the scientific community and the public sector. At the regional level, it leads the QCO4HPC project (Quantum Computing Applied to Performance and Energy Consumption Optimisation in Supercomputing Infrastructures). Furthermore, the National Strategy for Quantum Technologies 2025-2030 expressly recognises COMPUTAEX as a strategic player in the national quantum ecosystem, highlighting its role in the future operation of one of the country’s quantum emulators. In addition, the Center has established international collaborations and has access to quantum computing services from Fujitsu in Japan to enhance its research.
“We are delighted to be able to support COMPUTAEX and the Extremadura community in establishing themselves as a key ecosystem in quantum technologies,” says Araceli Venegas Gómez, director of QURECA, who was born and raised in the region.
