SUMMARY:Workshop IV: Topology\, Quantum Error Correction and Quantum Gravity
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n \nQuantum error correction has deep implications beyond quantum computing—two examples being its connections to topological phases of matter and quantum gravity. Recent exciting developments in these directions include the discovery of optimal quantum LDPC codes\, progress towards the quantum PCP conjecture such as the proof of the NTLS conjecture\, and the invention of Floquet codes. The workshop will focus on such new developments with the goal of finding better quantum error correction codes and new applications to open problems in quantum complexity theory\, topological phases of matter\, and quantum gravity. Error correction is also crucial in black hole physics. This workshop will explore (not necessarily unital) coding and complexity problems emerging from the information paradox. \nThis workshop will include a poster session; a request for posters will be sent to registered participants in advance of the workshop.

SUMMARY:Workshop III: Many-body Quantum Systems via Classical and Quantum Computation
DESCRIPTION:The ability to coherently manipulate complex quantum many-body states offers the potential for dramatic improvements in a wide range of applications such as fast computation\, enhanced sensing\, and secure communications. However\, understanding and ultimately controlling the dynamics of such entangled quantum states pose a number of challenges in mathematics and physics. In particular\, the description of such complex quantum states often lies beyond the standard approach used in different areas of physics owing to their rich complexity. \nThis workshop is devoted to the related questions of how quantum and classical computers can be used to address important problems in quantum many-body physics\, ranging from simulating quantum chemistry to understanding information dynamics in quantum circuits. While the faithful representation of full many-particle Hilbert spaces on a classical computer is exponentially costly\, efficient approximate descriptions for specific purposes have been developed such as tensor network representations or mapping random circuits to statistical mechanics models. Also\, recent advances of quantum technologies enable the empirical investigation of previously unexplored regimes of physics with high complexity\, demanding new approaches to robustly controlling and utilizing near-term quantum devices for scientific discoveries and practical applications. This workshop will report the status quo of these developments and facilitate discussions for future research directions. \nThis workshop will include a poster session; a request for posters will be sent to registered participants in advance of the workshop. \nThis is a Julian Schwinger Workshop on Multiscale Physics\, made possible by a gift from the Julian Schwinger Foundation for Physics Research (JSF).

SUMMARY:Novel Quantum States of Matter in Moiré Materials
DESCRIPTION:The advent of moiré quantum materials has opened an entirely new highly tunable platform for exploring the interplay between electronic structure\, interactions\, symmetry\, and topology. Starting with the discovery of correlated insulator states and superconductivity in magic-angle\, twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG)\, a growing variety of moiré systems have emerged. This has resulted in many novel correlated and topological phenomena\, including new quantum anomalous Hall systems\, generalized Wigner crystals\, and integer and fractional Chern insulators\, among others. This rich phenomenology has attracted enormous theoretical attention and\, simultaneously\, the interest of the entire repertoire of experimental condensed matter techniques to deepen our understanding of these exotic phases. \nThis conference will bring together the broad community of researchers interested in all these topics of moiré materials. We aim to have a healthy mix of experimentalists and theorists and will recruit high quality speakers in all of the topics mentioned above. Finally\, as progress in the field has been rapid\, a few slots will be reserved for breaking news related to the conference topics.

SUMMARY:2023 Winter Conference on Quantum Simulation with Quantum Hardware
DESCRIPTION:While simulation of quantum problems with classical computers has revolutionized fields like chemistry\, materials science\, condensed matter and nuclear physics\, successful implementation of quantum algorithms has the potential to yield enormous additional computational capabilities for studying complex quantum systems. Over the past several decades there has been considerable progress in the development of quantum hardware. Currently\, state of the art quantum machines\, both analog and digital\, are at the threshold where the computational power of these machines is about to exceed that of conventional computers. \nAt this Aspen Winter Conference\, we will bring together people working on state-of-the-art quantum hardware\, both analog and digital\, with leading theoretical physicists in order to explore how to harness the power of quantum computers for solving a broad range of hard quantum problems. The meeting will foster collaborations by exploring what can be done with the current generation of quantum hardware\, identifying quantum problems/models which may be solvable using quantum hardware in the future\, and determining how to optimize quantum hardware for solving physics problems.
