SUMMARY:Planning Workshop on Quantum Computing (PlanQC 2024)
DESCRIPTION:April 28\, 2024\, https://www.asplos-conference.org/asplos2024/ \nIn conjunction with ACM International Conference on Architectural Support for Programming Languages and Operating Systems (ASPLOS 2024) San Diego\, CA (USA) \nFunding for quantum computing has come from a variety of programs at the National Science Foundation (NSF)\, which have been multi-disciplinary and cut across multiple NSF divisions. However\, no NSF quantum initiatives have been led by the Computer\, Information Science and Engineering (CISE) directorate within NSF. Undoubtedly\, there is a surge in demand driven by open positions in academia and industry focused on the computing side of quantum. There is arguably a need for a focused program on quantum computing led by CISE in cooperation with other directorates to enable the next generation of quantum algorithms\, quantum architectures\, quantum communication\, quantum systems\, quantum software and compilers. The objective of this\nworkshop is to identify areas of quantum computing in particular to enable new discoveries in quantum science and engineering\, and to meaningly contribute to creating a Quantum computing-ready workforce. \nTo articulate this need and to develop a plan for a new CISE-led quantum program\, we plan to bring several leading senior and some junior researchers in quantum computing together for a planning workshop complemented by selected ones beyond the CISE community to foster interdisciplinary interactions. \nThis workshop will lead to a comprehensive report that will provide a detailed assessment of the need for a new CISE program and will provide a description of the research areas that such a program should focus on. With such a new program\, NSF would be able to focus its efforts on the computing aspects of quantum science and greatly enhance its ability to sustain the leadership role of the United States in this area of strategic interest. This workshop and report will be the first stepping stone in bootstrapping such a program. Call for participation. \nWe invite researchers both already active in quantum computing and those aspiring to become active to participate in a one-day workshop\, including some participants from the quantum application domains. The focus of the workshop will be to engage in discussions and summarize findings in writing to create a report on open quantum problems and motivate workforce development in the area. The workshop format will be alternating plenary and break-out sessions to provide a unifying vision while identifying research challenges in a diverse set of subareas. \nQuantum Topics \nAlgorithms\nArchitectures\nCommunication\nCompilers/Languages\nSimulation\nSoftware\nTheory\nApplications\nClassical control and peripheral hardware\n————————————————\nWorkshop Chairs and Organizers\nFrank Mueller North Carolina State University\nFred Chong University of Chicago\nVipin Chaudhary Case Western Reserve University\nSamee Khan Mississippi State University\nGokul Ravi University of Michigan

SUMMARY:Quantum Emulation 2024 | London
DESCRIPTION:Quantum Motion presents\, Quantum Emulation 2024. \nThis is a one-day event in London aimed at people who develop\, use\, or would like to use software that emulates quantum computers. The plan is to stream the key talks\, but much of the event is focused on exploring the systems and so requires in-person participation. We’ll focus on full-state emulation and the tools and techniques that enable that. \nAs quantum hardware increases in complexity\, the challenge of designing useful algorithms for these machines comes into focus and the prospects for techniques like error mitigation and quantum error correction become clear. Key details such as the precise nature of noise and imperfections in quantum machines\, as well as their speeds and topologies become apparent for a range of platforms. \nAgainst this evolving landscape it is more interesting than ever to have software\, running on conventional non-quantum devices\, that can closely emulate the early quantum systems. In this way we can test our ideas against a variety of architectures\, topologies\, gate sets and noise models. Moreover we can create full Virtual Quantum Devices (VQDs) and test them to inform the best direction for experimental developments. \nA key system that will feature in the event is the QuEST (quantum exact simulation toolkit) family: \n\nCore QuEST\, implemented in c\nQuESTlink\, the award winning interface to QuEST from Mathematica™\npyQuEST\, the latest member of the family allowing python programmers to fully benefit from the highly optimised backend.\n\nLeading developers for QuEST including Tyson Jones and Richard Meister will be present throughout and happy to help attendees install and use the software\, as well as being receptive to feedback. \nBeyond this the organising team welcome discussions\, debates and talks about all aspects of emulation\, as well as the repeated topics of quantum compilation and resource audits. \nThis event is hosted by Quantum Motion and co-sponsored by UK National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC).

SUMMARY:Quantum Matters in Materials Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As a part of the JARVIS workshops series\, NIST is organizing the 3rd Quantum Matters in Materials Science (QMMS) workshop in person on Feb 21-22\, 2024. The workshop will be focused on quantum phenomena in emerging materials for next generation devices. All materials are inherently quantum in nature\, but only when quantum phenomena manifest at the classical scale can we hope to leverage their properties for applications. Large scale initiatives such as the Materials Genome Initiative\, the National Quantum Initiative\, and the CHIPS for America Act represent a compelling approach to investigate quantum materials and accelerate their development for quantum information systems (QIS)\, for the use in future integrated circuits\, and other practical industrial applications. For this approach to be successful\, it is essential to have good synergy between experimental and computational work. This workshop aims at streamlining this effort. To make the workshop as effective as possible\, we plan to mainly focus on 2D and 3D inorganic superconductor\, topological\, magnetic\, and semiconducting materials\, but we are not limited to those systems. \nSome of the key topics to be addressed by both theory and experiments are:\n1) discovery and characterization of new superconductors/topological\, magnetic\, and semiconducting materials\,\n2) optimization of known quantum materials\,\n3) investigation of defect induced behavior and transitions\,\n4) Electronics\, spintronics\, and quantum memory applications\,\n5) challenges in applying QIS technologies at industrial scale\,\n6) successes and challenges in integrating next-generation materials into integrated circuits (microchips)\,\n7) High fidelity many-body computational methods to treat quantum materials.\n8) applications for quantum computing and quantum simulations

SUMMARY:Computing with Physical Systems
DESCRIPTION:There has been an explosion of interest in unconventional approaches to computing with physical systems (some recent reviews/works: [MMB2022]\, [SM2023]\, [WOG+2020]\, [HAK+23]). This has been driven by multiple factors\, including (1) the realization that there is the potential to build vastly more energy-efficient or faster computers if we rethink how we harness physical processes for computing – giving up some of the abstractions computers have relied on for 50+ years in exchange for being able to operate closer to the fundamental limits that physics allows\, and (2) the growth of machine learning – which provides both a strong motivator for more efficient machines to be built\, as well as a wealth of methods that can be used to reimagine how computers work. This Aspen Winter Conference will bring together both theorists and experimentalists across a broad range of disciplines – including soft condensed matter\, biological physics\, neuroscience\, machine learning\, hard condensed matter\, optics\, fluid dynamics\, and quantum information science – who typically do not have the opportunity to interact but who are all exploring various aspects of computing in different physical systems. Topics will include: \n\nInformation processing and dynamics in classical and quantum systems\, including (but not limited to) electronic\, spintronic\, optical\, mechanical\, fluidic\, biological\, and chemical systems.\nDevices\, architectures\, and algorithms for constructing physical machines that can learn without electronic processors.\nFundamental limits to computing: time\, energy\, precision.\nIntegrated sensing\, computation\, and actuation.\n\nThe conference will feature invited talks and discussion sessions. All participants will be invited to present posters. A welcome reception will be held on Sunday 7 January 2024\, and the scientific program will take place from Monday 8 January 2024 until lunchtime on Friday 12 January 2024.

SUMMARY:Workshop IV: Topology\, Quantum Error Correction and Quantum Gravity
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n \nQuantum error correction has deep implications beyond quantum computing—two examples being its connections to topological phases of matter and quantum gravity. Recent exciting developments in these directions include the discovery of optimal quantum LDPC codes\, progress towards the quantum PCP conjecture such as the proof of the NTLS conjecture\, and the invention of Floquet codes. The workshop will focus on such new developments with the goal of finding better quantum error correction codes and new applications to open problems in quantum complexity theory\, topological phases of matter\, and quantum gravity. Error correction is also crucial in black hole physics. This workshop will explore (not necessarily unital) coding and complexity problems emerging from the information paradox. \nThis workshop will include a poster session; a request for posters will be sent to registered participants in advance of the workshop.
