SUMMARY:Spring School on Open Quantum Systems
DESCRIPTION:The Challenge Institute for Quantum Computation (CIQC)\, in collaboration with the UCLA Center for Quantum Science and Engineering (CQSE)\, the UNM Center for Quantum Information and Control (CQuIC)\, and the UCLA Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) will be hosting its second annual Spring School in QIS from March 21-25\, 2022. The topic of this year’s weeklong school will be Open Quantum Systems. The school will be aimed at experimentalists and new theory students working in quantum information science and related fields. Graduate students\, postdoctoral fellows\, and faculty researchers who desire an introduction to open quantum systems are encouraged to apply. Our goals for this school are: \n\nProvide both a primer of open quantum systems and it applications in quantum information science\nConvene a multidisciplinary group of students and researchers to help build a common language around open quantum systems\, accelerate development in the field\, and provide new approaches and tools for experimentalists and theoreticians alike to apply to their work to different physical systems\nProvide a platform to foster cross-cutting collaborations and networks\, and to aid the establishment of a diverse group of researchers who will drive the QIS field forward.\n\nThe tentative schedule of lectures is as follows: \nMarch 21\, M Introduction to Open Quantum Systems (Daniel Lidar\, USC) \nMarch 22\, T Control of Open Quantum Systems (Christiane Koch\, FU Berlin) \nMarch 23\, W Continuous Measurement and Quantum Trajectories (Ivan Deutsch\, UNM) \nMarch 24\, Th Quantum Circuits (Matthew Fisher\, UCSB/ITP) \nMarch 25\, F Measurement and Control for QEC (Liang Jiang\, U Chicago) \nThe school will be held remotely and to combat “Zoom fatigue”\, we are planning a modest schedule for each day\, starting at 9AM Pacific time to enable participation from various time zones. Each day will start with approximately 1.5 hours of lecture followed by 1.5 hours of student breakout sessions during which students will work in small groups on assigned problems. The school will then reconvene to review problem set solutions and finish with an additional 1 hour of lecture. Local watch parties and in-person breakout sessions may be hosted at UCLA\, UCB\, and UNM by the respective quantum computing student groups on those campuses.

SUMMARY:New Directions in Strong Correlation Physics
DESCRIPTION:From Strange Metals to Topological Superconductivity\nA number of recent developments in the field of strongly correlated electron systems such as strange metal behaviour probed by new tools or detected in new settings\, as well as new types of unconventional superconductors\, including candidate topological superconductors—are creating a lot of excitement. Yet these developments have often taken place in isolation\, with very limited cross-talk between these topics. This workshop seeks to discuss these topics under a common roof. The goal is to advance the understanding of complex materials and stimulate progress in adjacent fields.

SUMMARY:Quantum Simulation with Quantum Hardware
DESCRIPTION:While simulation of quantum problems with classical computers has revolutionized fields like chemistry\, materials science\, condensed matter and nuclear physics\, successful implementation of quantum algorithms has the potential to yield enormous additional computational capabilities for studying complex quantum systems. Over the past several decades there has been considerable progress in the development of quantum hardware. Currently\, state of the art quantum machines\, both analog and digital\, are at the threshold where the computational power of these machines is about to exceed that of conventional computers. \nAt this Aspen Winter Conference\, we will bring together people working on state-of-the-art quantum hardware\, both analog and digital\, with leading theoretical physicists in order to explore how to harness the power of quantum computers for solving a broad range of hard quantum problems. The meeting will foster collaborations by exploring what can be done with the current generation of quantum hardware\, identifying quantum problems/models which may be solvable using quantum hardware in the future\, and determining how to optimize quantum hardware for solving physics problems.

SUMMARY:Towards Classically Intractable Quantum Simulations of Physics and Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:Within the next decade\, quantum computing has the potential to provide insight to problems in physics and chemistry that would otherwise be intractable. Examples of such problems span from predicting molecular spectra to simulating field theories to probing the dynamics of spin models. Because large fault tolerant machines are still in the distant future\, it will be important to design algorithms customized to current and near-term experimental hardware with a focus on NISQ (noisy-intermediate-scale quantum) devices as well as early fault tolerant machines. In order for quantum computational approaches to compete effectively with the best classical methods for simulation\, it will be necessary to leverage every trick discovered in the “classical” quantum community and so we encourage the participation of those who have backgrounds in classical simulations of quantum many-body physics but might be new to quantum computation. This program will encourage exploration of both physics-based and complexity theoretic approaches to assessing which systems are most challenging for classical simulations\, novel ways of using the resources provided by NISQ processors\, and strategies for significantly reducing the costs of fault-tolerant quantum simulations. The program will bring together diverse communities and viewpoints at the intersection of error-correction\, many-body physics\, and quantum algorithms to tackle these problems.

SUMMARY:Workshop: From controlling quantum systems to new physics discoveries\,
DESCRIPTION:In the last decade or so quantum technologies have made tremendous progress\, from redefining the second to establishing quantum supremacy. This unequalled ability to control quantum systems leads to a potential to make measurements with unprecedented accuracy. Quantum technologies have already been at play in various fronts such as the observation of gravitational waves and in searches for CP violation by bounding the electric dipole moments of the electron and the neutron. \nAt the same time\, the field of particle physics\, given its primary objective to decipher the fundamental laws of nature\, is in a critical junction. While observations tell us that new physics exist they cannot be associated with any definite scale. The conventional paradigm\, that the Higgs fine-tuning problem is solved via a symmetry principle is\, therefore\, the leading anchor in the perception that new dynamics at the TeV scale need to be present\, within the current reach of colliders. This paradigm is currently under a two-pronged attack: (i) the LHC Run-2 has come to an end\, leaving no traces of new physics; (ii) new theories emerged\, addressing the fine-tuning problem outside the conventional paradigm. For the first time in the modern history of particle physics there is no preferred energy range for the new physics scale\, even if electroweak-naturalness as criterion is included. \nThe above substantiates the importance of searches at the precision frontier as these can cover many decades of energy scales. In particular quantum sensors were shown to be able to search for light new degrees of freedom\, for instance ultra-light dark matter with masses between the sub eV range all the way down to the 10-22eV range describing fuzzy dark matter. \nIn order to maximize the impact of using quantum technology to probe fundamental interactions it is critical that each community improves its knowledge of the other discipline. We plan to bring in world experts in quantum technologies and particle physics in order to discuss how the recent progress in the precision front of quantum sensors could be used to search for new physics and study fundamental interactions. We plan to invite practitioners of both AMO and particle physics to sit together and learn from each other about the state of the art and to discuss how quantum sensors can be used to search for “old” and “new” types of Beyond the Standard Model physics.
