SUMMARY:2025 Winter School On Quantum Networks
DESCRIPTION:The goal of the Winter School is to provide introductory tutorials at all levels in topics that are new to the participants\, who include CQN students\, postdocs\, faculty\, CQN industry partners\, other outside qualified persons (including students at non-CQN schools)\, and industry and government scientists. \nEach course is co-developed and co-taught by two people – a lead instructor and a co-instructor. Co-instructors are graduate students and postdocs. This arrangement\, based on a program developed a decade ago by Michael Raymer and Judith Eisen (The Science Literacy Program at University of Oregon\, https://scilit.uoregon.edu)\, has two purposes: to mentor students who wish to learn best practices in teaching under the mentorship of an experienced instructor\, and to improve the quality of the short course by adopting best practices in inquiry-based teaching with the active participation of the co-instructor.

SUMMARY:Workshop on Quantum Technologies (WQT) - COMSNETS 2025
DESCRIPTION:COMSNETS 2025\n\n\n\n\n17th International Conference on COMmunication Systems & NETworkS\nJanuary 6 – 10\nChancery Pavilion Hotel\, Residency Road\, Bengaluru\, India\n\nInitiative by COMSNETS Association\n\n  \nThe 20th century\, often referred to as the information age\, witnessed the first quantum revolution with the invention of transistors\, superconducting levitation\, atomic clocks\, and superfluidity. There is a broad consensus that we are now at the cusp of a second quantum revolution\, and that the 21st century will be even more disruptive with the development of new quantum technologies. By exploiting quantum resources such as superposition and entanglement\, we can radically transform technologies from communication to computing. For instance\, in the communication domain\, quantum physics can offer the ultimate (information-theoretic) security; while for certain problems in computing\, quantum computers can potentially offer speed-ups that are unattainable by their classical counterparts. Besides them\, quantum sensing is another mature quantum technology that can offer sensors with sensitivities approaching the ultimate (Heisenberg) limit and highly miniaturized footprints\,  imperceptible by their traditional counterparts. The very fragility of quantum states\, which is a hindrance to their scalability in communication and computing\, makes them invaluable sensors. The technological readiness levels of these offerings are improving so rapidly that some of them have already become commercially viable. \nWith 2025 set to be the International Year of Quantum Technologies celebrating the 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics\, and after a highly successful launch of QCom(P)\, the first international workshop on Quantum Communication and Computing at COMSNETS 2024\, we are now ready to make it bigger\, better and more general. Hence\, going forward\, we have expanded the scope and now present the Workshop on Quantum Technologies (WQT)\, which will be co-located with COMSNETS 2025 and will encompass all 3 major drivers of quantum technology as of today: sensing\, communications and computing. The aim of this workshop is to bring together quantum researchers\, scientists\, engineers\, entrepreneurs\, developers\, students\, practitioners\, educators\, and programmers\, from both academia and industry\, working in this field. In this context\, the workshop also intends to include the topic of understanding what it takes to bring more of the technology from an academic setting to real-world applications based on the industry requirements and technology development roadmap. \nCall for Papers\nProspective participants are invited to submit their research contributions in the form of articles\, surveys\, tutorials\, work-in-progress reports\, extended abstracts\, etc. that range from breakthrough ideas to real-world applications. This workshop would enable participants to present and discuss their accepted submissions via contributed talks and poster presentations.  WQT features both experimental and theoretical presentations. This workshop also comprises keynote addresses and invited talks on areas deemed topical and of special interest to the attendees. Finally\, the workshop\, along with a dedicated industry session\, aims to serve as a forum to exchange ideas\, present new results\, connect and foster collaborations. The topics of interest include\, but are not limited to: \nQuantum Computing: \n\nQubit modalities – both theoretical and experimental results\nHardware\, platforms and architectures for quantum and hybrid computing\nQuantum error correction and fault-tolerant quantum computing\nSoftware stacks\, tools and programming languages for quantum-enhanced computing\nError mitigation\, error suppression and error management techniques\nQuantum algorithms for NISQ and beyond\nHybrid gate-annealer-classical computing\nQuantum machine learning and artificial intelligence\nQuantum-enhanced optimization\nQuantum simulations and quantum chemistry\nQuantum-enhanced solutions for different applications and domains\nBenchmarking in the areas of quantum computing\nQuantum-inspired computing architecture\nQuantum-inspired classical algorithms\n\nQuantum Sensing: \n\nQuantum magnetometry\nQuantum electrometry\nQuantum gravimetry\nQuantum inertial sensing (gyroscopy)\nAtomic clocks\nQuantum(-insipred) imaging\nHybrid & intelligent quantum sensing\nQuantum-enhanced metrology\nSignal processing & AI for quantum sensing\n\nQuantum Communication: \n\nNetworked & distributed quantum computing and sensing\nQuantum for Blockchain and IoT\nQuantum communication and networks\nQuantum cryptography and post-quantum cryptography\n\nFoundational topics of quantum technologies: \n\nQuantum complexity theory\nQuantum information theory\nQuantum estimation and detection

DESCRIPTION:Exact Solutions in Quantum Information: Entanglement\, Topology\, and Quantum Circuits (25w5429)\n\nOrganizers\nRobert Konik (Brookhaven National Lab) \nAditi Mitra (New York University) \nSara Murciano (Caltech) \nGiuseppe Mussardo (Scuola Internazionale di Studi Avanzati) \nJesko Sirker (University of Manitoba) \n\n\nDescription\n\nThe Banff International Research Station will host the “Exact Solutions in Quantum Information: Entanglement\, Topology\, and Quantum Circuits” workshop in Banff from February 9 – 14\, 2025. \nQuantum information science (QIS) directs itself to forms of computing and information processing that subvert classical bounds by exploiting quantum mechanical superposition and entanglement. Because of the appearance of first-generation quantum computers\, so called noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices\, quantum information science has received intense attention from the physics\, mathematical\, computer science\, and chemistry communities. However\, such NISQ devices are extremely limited in their capabilities. This workshop is devoted to providing the theoretical and mathematical underpinnings by which these limitations can be circumvented. To do so it will engage a wide ranging community of theoretical and mathematical physicists. Beyond the traditional research presentations\, it will offer a short course aimed at early career researchers as well as a lecture aimed at the general public. \nThe Banff International Research Station for Mathematical Innovation and Discovery (BIRS) is a collaborative Canada-US-Mexico venture that provides an environment for creative interaction as well as the exchange of ideas\, knowledge\, and methods within the Mathematical Sciences\, with related disciplines and with industry. The research station is located at The Banff Centre in Alberta and is supported by Canada’s Natural Science and Engineering Research Council (NSERC)\, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF)\, and Alberta’s Advanced Education and Technology.

SUMMARY:SPIE Photon Counting and Quantum Optics 2025
DESCRIPTION:Photon counting represents the ultimate level of sensitivity in optical measurements. The feasibility of individual photon detection has opened a broad spectrum of new applications in both research and industry now. \nThe fast emerging types of solid state photon detectors are providing simple\, cheap and rugged tools to register and time tag photons. Superconducting photon detectors\, either in the form of an ultrathin superconducting nano-stripe or a transition-edge sensor\, are presently the highest performance devices\, especially in the near-infrared optical spectrum. These devices are routinely used in quantum information experiments. They exhibit high quantum efficiency\, MHz counting rate\, and very low jitter\, and can be implemented as photon-number and/or photon-energy resolving devices. Avalanche photodiodes specifically designed for single photon counting have been developed on the basis of various materials during the last 30 years. They have been tailored for numerous applications in optical sensors\, quantum cryptography\, optical ranging and Lidar\, time resolved spectroscopy\, laser-induced fluorescence\, astronomy and optical time transfer\, to name just a few. Finally\, there is a fast growing area of photon counters based on various nanostructures and nanodevices\, as well as high energy radiation photon detectors for nonproliferation\, security and medical uses. The conference will gather an audience from the contributing research community active in the academic\, industrial\, space related\, physics and research fields. \nQuantum Optics incorporates a variety of experimental systems in which the interaction of single quantum objects can be controlled close to the ultimate limit of fundamental quantum fluctuations. These quantum objects include atoms\, ions and photons\, as well as artificial solid-state based objects like electrons in quantum dots\, color-centers in solids or superconducting qubits. The research focus is on the realization of strong enough coupling between quantum objects so that the controlled interaction can be employed as a building block of quantum information processing. Quantum state transfer of photons into quantum memories and two-qubit quantum gates have been recently realized and are ready to be upgraded for being used in larger quantum networks and for extending the scope of applications. All these efforts require the most possible detailed understanding of quantum physics of these objects and their interactions in hybrid systems. This objective stimulates a large scope of experimental and theoretical researches\, ranging from entanglement theory as far as to material sciences\, which fields exhibit a convergence in their objectives and terminology. In order to survey the current state-of-the-art in photon-based quantum information processing\, the discussion is open to both fundamental aspects as well as basic and applied research oriented on the realization of qubits and controlled interactions. \nThe conference program will consist of oral and poster presentations on topics that include\, but are not limited to: \nPhoton Counting \n\nnew photon counting detectors\, both semiconducting and superconducting\ntime correlated photon counting advances\nphoton number resolving detection\nlaser ranging and laser time transfer\nphoton counting devices in astronomy\nlaser-induced fluorescence\nsingle molecule detection\noptical time domain reflectometry\noptical sensors\nhigh-energy radiation photon detectors\nimaging applications using multipixel photon detectors\nnew and emerging applications of photon counting.\n\nQuantum Optics \n\nquantum communication and cryptography\nquantum simulation and computing\nquantum sensing\nquantum imaging and entanglement enhanced metrology\nbasic components for quantum information processing\nlow dimensional interacting quantum systems\nquantum amplifiers\, memories and interfaces\nopen quantum systems: driving\, dissipation and control\nmeasurement theory\nquantum networks\ncold atoms\ndetection and metrology for quantum information processing components.

SUMMARY:Quantum Computing Applications in Economics and Finance Conference
DESCRIPTION:Friday April 11\, 2025 \nQuantum computation\, a paradigm shift in computer science\, holds the potential to affect research in economics and finance profoundly. Quantum algorithms\, such as quantum annealing and the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm\, can significantly speed up optimization and asset allocation by exploring vast solution spaces more efficiently. Quantum Monte Carlo methods enhance the accuracy and speed of simulations used in pricing derivatives and assessing risk. Additionally\, quantum machine learning can improve predictive models. \nA conference and a special issue of the Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control are organized to promote cross-disciplinary exchanges on implementing quantum computational methods to problems of interest to economics and finance. The topics include\, but are not limited to\, solving DSGE models\, pricing of financial risk\, quantum ambiguity and econometric model specification\, quantum money\, and cryptography\, among others.

SUMMARY:World Quantum Day
DESCRIPTION:Discover the language of the universe\n\n\n\n\nWhy April 14?\n\n\n\n\nThe World Quantum Day is celebrated on April 14\, a reference to 4.14\, the rounded first digits of Planck’s constant: 4.1356677×10−15 eV⋅s = 0.000 000 000 000 004 1356677 electron volt second\, a product of energy and time that is the fundamental constant governing quantum physics. \nWhy is Planck’s constant so important? Did you know it is used to define the kilogram? And\, otherwise\, how does it affect our lives? These are some of the questions\, among many others\, that will be addressed by the World Quantum Day activities. \nAnd what other dates and numbers do you consider important for Quantum Science and Technology? When was quantum physics first taught in your country? And in your university/school? Check out our Quantum@Calendar project\, which aims to record historical quantum events and make every day a quantum day! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGoals\n\n\n\n\nThe World Quantum Day aims at engaging the general public in the understanding and discussion of Quantum Science and Technology\, namely: \nhow it helps us understand Nature at its most fundamental level\,\nhow it helped us develop technologies that are crucial for our life today\,\nand how it can lead to future scientific and technological revolutions\, and how these can impact our society.\nThe World Quantum Day is an initiative from quantum scientists around the World\, launched on 14 April 2021 as the countdown towards the first global celebration on 14 April 2022. \nIt is a decentralized and bottom-up initiative\, inviting all scientists\, engineers\, educators\, communicators\, entrepreneurs\, technologists\, historians\, philosophers\, artists\, museologists\, producers\, etc.\, and their organisations\, to develop their own activities\, such as outreach talks\, exhibitions\, lab tours\, panel discussions\, interviews\, artistic creations\, etc.\, to celebrate the World Quantum Day around the World.
