SUMMARY:Nonequilibrium Quantum and Statistical Thermodynamics Workshop
DESCRIPTION:As a physical theory\, thermodynamics is somewhat unique in that its development was driven largely by practicality\, and in particular\, the need to optimise the efficiency of the first thermal machines which appeared in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The subsequent refinement and developments in classical thermodynamics and statistical mechanics established that\, in addition to the clear technological advancements that the theory catalysed\, thermodynamics also offers a unique insight into deep foundational questions. While the application of thermodynamic concepts to quantum systems has a long history\, the last 20 years has led to a new focus on reassessing core thermodynamic concepts for non-equilibrium systems and when the nuances of quantum theory are more carefully considered. The goal of this workshop is to bring together leading researchers across cognate areas from classical statistical mechanics\, classical and quantum condensed matter physics\, and quantum thermodynamics to share insights and developments that cross the boundaries between disciplines. \n  \nThis will be a two and half day event\, featuring both long talks (1 hour) and short talks (30 minutes). Talks will occur in pairs\, with each long talk followed by a short talk\, followed by a break to allow for discussion and networking. The event will begin with a plenary talk\, aimed at setting the scene and giving context to both the classical and quantum aspects of the workshop\, and will end with a summary talk aimed at giving a high-level overview of the state-of-the-art and identifying potentially fruitful research areas for future interdisciplinary collaborations.

SUMMARY:5th NIST Quantum Matters in Material Sciences (QMMS) Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The 5th Quantum Matters in Materials Science (QMMS) workshop organized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will be held as an in-person only event at the NIST Gaithersburg campus\, Maryland on February 18-19\, 2026. \nThe workshop will be focused on quantum phenomena in emerging materials for next generation devices. All materials are inherently quantum in nature\, but when quantum phenomena manifest at the classical scale\, we can hope to leverage their properties for applications. Large scale initiatives such as the Materials Genome Initiative\, the National Quantum Initiative\, and the CHIPS for America Act represent compelling approaches to investigate quantum materials and accelerate their development for quantum information systems (QIS)\, for the use in future integrated circuits\, and other practical industrial applications. For these approaches and initiatives to be successful\, it is essential to have good synergy between experimental and computational efforts. This workshop aims at streamlining this effort. To make the workshop as effective as possible\, we plan to mainly focus on 2D and 3D inorganic superconducting\, topological\, magnetic\, and semiconducting materials\, but we are not limited to those systems. \nSome of the key topics to be addressed by both theory and experiments are: \n\ndiscovery and characterization of new superconductors/topological\, magnetic\, and semiconducting materials\,\noptimization of known quantum materials\,\ninvestigation of defect induced behavior and transitions\,\nelectronics\, spintronics\, and quantum memory applications\,\nchallenges in applying QIS technologies at industrial scale\,\nsuccesses and challenges in integrating next-generation materials into integrated circuits (microchips)\nthe role of material interfaces at the quantum level\,\nhigh fidelity many-body computational methods to treat quantum materials\,\napplications for quantum computing and quantum simulations.

SUMMARY:Quantum Power and National Security: Canada’s New Strategic Imperative
DESCRIPTION:Quantum technologies are rapidly moving from concept to capability and are establishing themselves as a foundation of both modern defence and economic competitiveness. From NORAD modernization to NATO’s quantum strategy\, allied nations are positioning defence as a key partner and first adopter of these dual-use technologies—integrating quantum sensing\, communications\, and emerging quantum computing capabilities into their core missions. \nNew federal investments signal the beginning of a similar shift in Canada\, with quantum being positioned as a key engine of Canada’s economic growth and national security. \nOn February 24\, 2026\, the Empire Club of Canada will present Quantum Power and National Security: Canada’s New Strategic Imperative. In this timely address\, Lisa Lambert\, CEO of Quantum Industry Canada (QIC)\, will examine how quantum capabilities will shape Canada’s economic outlook and security posture\, what sovereign capacity is required to protect critical systems\, and how Canada can position itself as a strategic contributor within the G7 and NATO alliances. \nFurther insights and perspectives will follow from a distinguished panel moderated by The Honourable Erin O’Toole\, P.C.\, C.D.\, and featuring Francesco Bova\, Associate Professor at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management; David Roy-Guay\, Founder and CEO of SBQuantum; and Lieutenant-General Darcy Molstad\, CD\, Commander Canadian Joint Forces Command.
