SUMMARY:51st IFF Spring School - Quantum Technology
DESCRIPTION:In the 2021 IFF Spring School\, the students and young researchers will be exposed to the modern quantum mechanics tool box in order to equip them with the tools needed to tackle research problems in various different areas. The lecture plan will be organized to survey the entire scope of the current Quantum Technology Flagship of the European Union (qt.eu). \nLectures will be given covering each of the main research thrusts of the flagship: Quantum Communication\, including quantum tools for network security and privacy; Quantum Computation\, involving techniques from both solid state physics and atomic physics\, where the quest is to have large-scale\, reliable implementation of powerful computation; Quantum Simulation\, which recognizes that even with near-term quantum processors of modest power\, progress can be made in uncovering new features of our natural quantum world; and Quantum Sensing and Metrology\, in which new quantum effects come closer to the ultimate limits of sensitivity. \nOther topics will also be covered\, from fundamental subjects such as quantum information theory\, to the very technical area of systems engineering. Additional areas include quantum control techniques\, and software design for quantum systems. \nTopics of the lectures include the quantum view on:\n\nComputation: hardware platforms\, error correction\, verification\, software and applications\nCommunication\nSimulation\nSensing and Metrology\nControl Techniques\nSystem Engineering\nIndustrial Perspectives\n\nThe IFF Spring School is organised in close collaboration with universities\, research institutions\, and industry. \n  \n(Online Event)

SUMMARY:Towards a European Strategy on Quantum Photonics Integrated Circuits
DESCRIPTION:Photonic Integration in general and Quantum Photonic Integrated Circuits (QPICs) in particular are considered as an enabler for quantum technology\, and conversely quantum technology is regarded as a major emerging market for photonic integration. \nIn order to profit from the Quantum Flagship and the Photonics21 ETP that are actively supporting these fields in Europe\, joint efforts are needed to gain technological leadership and stimulate job creation. \nIn this context\, a joint Focus Group from both initiatives has been formed\, with the general goals of making QPICs a European priority and setting up a European QPIC infrastructure on the longer term. A position paper from this Focus Group that elaborates the required efforts in more detail is currently under preparation. This position paper will be used to build the basis for future cooperation of projects from both areas\, better access to infrastructure and joint funding activities of both initiatives. \nThe Focus Group is organizing a joint online workshop «Towards a European Strategy on Quantum Photonics Integrated Circuits»\, which aims on the one hand at presenting and discussing the preliminary version of the position paper and further elaborating the general goals of the joint efforts\, and\, on the other hand\, at bringing together and showcasing research projects working on QPICs stemming from different funding initiatives. \nA full summary of the workshop agenda\, as well as a registration form for participants\, can be found at this link.

SUMMARY:Machine Learning for Quantum 2021
DESCRIPTION:Machine Learning for Quantum 2021 will take place March 1-5\, 2021\, with an aim to bring together quantum physicists and experts in computer science and machine learning. \nThe last few years have seen a fast increase in the complexity of quantum technologies. In this context\, recent ground-breaking experimental work has started to highlight the potential of advanced signal processing\, such as machine learning and real-time adaptive techniques to speeding up\, scaling up\, and opening up new quantum technologies. \nThe conference is centred around three key questions\, which will be discussed over five days of tutorials\, talks\, and discussions:\nQ1 – how can a quantum sensor optimally extract information about its environment?\nQ2 – how can we achieve fully automatic calibration and operation of multi-qubit circuits?\nQ3– how can machine learning improve the performance of quantum algorithms for quantum chemistry? \nThis event is organised as a satellite Photonics Online Meetup (POM). The conference\, however\, is platform-agnostic\, and targets all quantum technology implementations. \nInterested individuals and parties can register to attend via this link. \nA full program summary can be accessed via this link.

SUMMARY:Machine Learning Photonics
DESCRIPTION:The school brings together experts in emerging photonic technologies\, machine learning techniques\, and fundamental physics who will share with young researchers their knowledge and interdisciplinary approaches for understanding and designing complex photonic systems and their practical applications.  In the new era of artificial intelligence\, algorithms and computational interfaces are broadly emerging as novel tools to do scientific research. The paradigms of machine learning also inspire interpretations and methodologies\, in both theories and experiments. Nonlinear\, quantum and bio-photonics\, as well as optical communications\, are surprisingly influenced by these new ideas. The summer school is aimed to explore machine learning applications in the specific fields of nonlinear optics and photonics. \nThe areas covered include\, but are not limited to: machine learning methods and complexity of optical communication systems\, including topics such as the nonlinear Fourier transform and transmission over multimode fibres; complexity in quantum systems emulated in photonics (including optical computing); complexity of emerging novel materials\, device and components such as micro-resonators and plasmonic nanostructures. Importantly\, the complexity in bio-medical photonic applications will be also considered as a high priority topic. \nThe summer school will focus on comprehensive review talks from major figures in complementary areas of photonics and machine learning. Invited speakers will deliver one or more 1-hour lectures over 5 days. We shall select up to 30 participants from the pool of most vibrant PhD students and postdocs\, with a special focus on Marie Curie Fellows as future leaders of European photonics science and industry.  Our school will be linked to the EU Innovative Training Networks such as European Industrial Doctorates FONTE and REAL-NET\, European Training Networks WON as well as POST-DIGITAL and other relevant EU projects. We expect a substantial impact of the proposed summer school in terms of cross-fertilization between different topics\, and knowledge sharing between invited speakers and participants.

SUMMARY:Thermodynamics of quantum systems and processes
DESCRIPTION:Thermodynamics and quantum mechanics are strongly connected. Even historically\, the investigation on the quantum framework started from thermodynamic studies by Planck and Einstein. Nowadays\, the thermodynamics of quantum systems and processes is a very active field with the ambition to shed light onto the foundations of quantum theory and pinpoint the potential for technological development brought forward by quantum devices. Recent experimental progress in the nanoscale domain\, requiring quantum mechanics for an accurate description\, are the perfect omen for a significant impact of thermodynamics of quantum systems in the emerging field of quantum technologies. \nMany questions at the interface between quantum theory and thermodynamics are currently being addressed\, including thermalisation of quantum systems\, the definition of work in quantum mechanics\, the role of coherence\, entanglement\, quantum fluctuations\, and quantum measurements in thermal machines\, the efficiency and power of quantum engines\, and the minimum temperature achievable in small quantum refrigerators. Such questions are vital for the development of quantum thermos-machines. \nThe goal of this school is to provide a broad yet technical overview of the emerging field of thermodynamics of quantum systems and processes\, with a series of lectures given by leading experts in the field. The school is mainly addressed to PhD students\, advanced master students and postdocs\, and aims to train a new generation of researchers in a field that\, in light of its emerging character\, sees a shortage of specialized scientists.
